Sharing Secrets to Increase Leadership Success!

Carlann Fergusson

 Tuesday, May 24, 2016

5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Nova Southeastern University (Orlando Campus)

  • If we don’t tell people what it takes to be successful, how can they be expected to meet our expectations?
  • If the succession planning and promotional selection processes are kept carefully guarded, how can leaders be expected to prepare themselves for the next level?

One reason for keeping leadership selection secret is that companies are concerned that the process will be seen as too subjective, but the most commonly used measures are more objective than most think. Furthermore, when companies keep their selection process hush-hush, leaders assume that the reasons they aren’t selected are even more subjective, such as politics or their boss’s personal opinion.

Another reason for secrecy is that executives are concerned that if leaders knew the measures they were being judged on, they would argue they are ready for the next level when they aren’t. However, a transparent policy actually results not in more complaints but in more requests for development feedback. By informing promotional candidates of the differentiators of success, it makes it much easier for leaders to uncover what is truly hindering their effectiveness at their current level and what factors are actually stalling their career.

In this interactive, 90-minute presentation, Carlann will uncover the espoused and actual measures of candidate selection. She will share insights that make development expectations much less subjective. Participants will engage in exercises to uncover hidden expectations of high performers, assess themselves to find their own potential career staller, and discover how the selection framework can be used to develop leaders.

As a past corporate executive overseeing talent and organizational development, Carlann Fergusson has been privy to thousands of succession planning and promotional discussions, has coached hundreds of leaders and has developed hundreds of leadership courses.  She uses this knowledge to break the code on what really gets one leader promoted while other leaders stall or derail.  By sharing these secrets, you can take your leadership programs beyond knowledge, skills and abilities and your mentoring programs can yield deep, focused discussions

At the end of the session, members will be able to:

  • Use insights from awareness of the components of potential to assist aspiring performers with understanding expectations
  • Use insights from their individual career staller to identify ways to improve their own effectiveness
  • Use insights from the group’s career stallers to identify new approaches to enhancing leader behaviors

During this event we will collect items for Dress for Success of Greater Orlando. Bring new or gently used items to donate to this worthy cause.
